The Group has a specialist focus on the retail upholstered furniture segment. The UK upholstery furniture market was estimated by GlobalData to be valued at £3.0bn (incl. VAT) in the calendar year 2024.
As a Group, we view the non-upholstery Home market1 as a key opportunity increasing our Total Addressable Market (‘TAM’) by approximately £5bn and we will initially focus on the £3bn Beds and mattress segment.
1 Non-upholstery Home market: beds and mattresses, dining and other living room furniture.
We see four broad categories of companies actively competing in the upholstered furniture retail market: specialist chains such as DFS, Sofology, ScS and Furniture Village; independents that are typically single store operations; predominantly online furniture retailers such as Wayfair; and larger general merchandise or homeware retailers such as Amazon, Argos, Dunelm, Ikea, John Lewis and Next.
The Group, through its DFS and Sofology brands, is the clear leader in the upholstered furniture market, with 36% market share by value in 2024 (GlobalData). This market remains highly fragmented and we see further opportunities to grow our market share.
We believe the integration of digital and physical is the right long-term approach to serve our customers. Our well-invested "integrated retail" business model allows us to adapt to changing consumer shopping habits, and positions us well for the future.
Historically, the Group has tended to gain market share through the cycle but particularly during periods of market weakness as competitors exit the market. For example, the Group’s market share increased from c.19% to 24% during the 2008 to 2010 Global Financial Crisis impacted period and we increased our market share even further in the 2021 to 2024 Covid pandemic and cost of living crisis (GlobalData).
